CFP: NACBS/MWCBS ANNUAL MEETING | MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA NOVEMBER 7-9, 2014

minneapolis skylineThe NACBS and its Midwest affiliate, the Midwest Conference on British Studies, seek participation by scholars in all areas of British Studies for the 2014 meeting. We will meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from November 7-9, 2014. We solicit proposals for panels on Britain, the British Empire and the British world. Our interests range from the medieval to the modern. We welcome participation by scholars across the humanities and social sciences. We invite panel proposals addressing selected themes, methodology, and pedagogy, as well as roundtable discussions of topical and thematic interest, including conversations among authors of recent books and reflections on landmark scholarship. We are particularly interested in submissions that have a broad chronological focus and/or interdisciplinary breadth. North American scholars, international scholars and Ph.D. students are all encouraged to submit proposals for consideration.

Panels typically include three papers and a comment, and ideally a separate chair; roundtables customarily have four presentations, as well as a chair; proposals which only include papers will be less likely to succeed. We are not able to accommodate individual paper proposals; those with paper ideas may search for additional panelists on lists such as H-Albion or at venues such as the NACBS Facebook page. Applicants may also write to the Program Chair for suggestions (nacbspogram@gmail.com). All scholars working in the field of British Studies are encouraged to apply for the 2014 conference. Panels that include both emerging and established scholars are encouraged: we welcome the participation of junior scholars and Ph.D. candidates beyond the qualifying stage. To foster intellectual interchange, we ask applicants to compose panels that feature participation from multiple institutions. No participant will be permitted to take part in more than one session.

The submission website at http://www.nacbs.org/conferences.html will open in mid January; submissions will close as of March 1, 2014. If you have questions about the submission process or suggestions for program development, please contact

MWCBS 2013 Local Details

Dear Colleagues of the Midwest Conference,

On behalf of DePaul University and the city of Chicago, we wish to welcome you to the 60th Annual Meeting of the MWCBS.  There will be 37 panels over the course of the three day conference, with 100 papers and presentations.

We wanted to provide you with some basic information regarding the conference site and its environment.

The conference site is at the DePaul Center of our Loop campus, at 1 East Jackson Blvd., in the heart of Chicago.  Travel and parking information can be found below.  The bus, elevated and subway systems are convenient for travel from the airport or train and bus stations to the DePaul Center, with stops at the corner of Jackson Blvd and State Street.

The conference itself is located on the 8th floor of the DePaul Center.  Enter the building through the Barnes and Noble store, continue to the interior lobby area just past the store.  There is a bank of elevators opposite an information and security desk.  Take one of the elevators up to the 8th floor.  The MWCBS reception and help desk are located across the hall from the elevators.

In addition to the conference, there are many amenities around the conference site.  See the official Chicago events website (http://www.choosechicago.com/), and the Fall events guide (http://guides.milespartnership.com/ch/ovg2/2013/index.html) for more information.

We’ve also attached a restaurant and events guide (in a Word file) for your reference.  The DePaul Center is walking distance from a number of excellent restaurants (both budget-friendly and expensive), Orchestra Hall, the Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, and Grant Park, as well as the Lakefront (east), and Chicago riverfront (both north and west…and south).

REMEMBER!  The conference is scheduled the same weekend as the Chicago Marathon.  The Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 13, beginning at 7:00 a.m.  The route is north of the conference site, but will have an impact on a few things: 1) you might wish to make restaurant reservations for Saturday night, in anticipation of a busier-than-usual dinner crowd in the Loop area (you can also avail yourself of public transportation to explore some of Chicago’s neighborhood restaurants, a bit further from the Loop); and 2) you might want to attend our last Sunday sessions to avoid some of the anticipated traffic congestion.  Chicago will also provide extra security (and security protocols) during the eve and day of the Marathon.  We will provide information on current conditions at the conference.

Again, we welcome you to our university and city and hope you enjoy your visit!

Best regards, Lisa Sigel and Eugene Beiriger, Local Arrangements co-chairs

MWCBS Announcements (Constitution changes and call for Secretary/Treasurer)

Notice of proposed change to the MWCBS Constitution

The MWCBS Executive is seeking membership approval to add the position of Immediate Past President to the Executive.  The proposed position will be a non-voting one.  The Immediate Past President will provide continuity and a valuable resource to the Executive in planning for future conferences, as well as carrying out public relations and outreach activities with other organizations to build useful partnerships for the MWCBS.  This amendment to the constitution will be proposed at the MWCBS annual Business Meeting at the luncheon in Chicago on Saturday 12 October 2013.  Any questions regarding this proposed amendment can be directed to the Secretary-Treasurer or the President.

Secretary/Treasurer for the MWCBS

The MWCBS is seeking someone to fill the position of Secretary/Treasurer.  The Secretary/Treasurer is a member of the Executive for a five-year term; their duties include helping to plan and administer the annual conference (most of this work takes place from July to October) and managing the MWCBS funds through their home institution.  The conference has adopted an easy-to-use online registration system, which has helped to greatly ease the work of the Treasurer.
The person who takes on this role will acquire great professional experience with the oldest regional and largest geographical British Studies conference.  In addition, Eric Tenbus, who has been in this position since 2009, has kindly agreed to remain in this role for an extra year, in order to work with the new Secretary/Treasurer,  explaining  the responsibilities and providing a period of transition.

MWCBS 2013: Room Reservations

The MWCBS has reserved rooms at the Silversmith Hotel at a special conference rate. The Silversmith Hotel is a historic, boutique hotel located two and a half blocks from the conference facilities and one block from Millennium Park and the Art Institute. It’s located conveniently next to the “El” line, so conference attendees can take public transportation straight from the airport if they choose.  Conference rates are $189.00 plus tax per room per night (two queens or a king) with free wifi and coffee. Participants are welcome to share rooms if they choose. There’s a special link to follow to book rooms for this rate. Please follow:

https://gc.synxis.com/rez.aspx?Hotel=17759&Chain=5415&group=MID101013
If you want to call to make reservations, the phone number is 1-800-979-0084.    Please state that the room should be part of the Mid-West Conference of British Studies block. Remember that the conference starts Friday 8 am, October 11, 2013 and goes until Sunday noon, October 13, 2013.

This room rate will be held only through September and only for a limited number of rooms so we suggest that attendees reserve rooms as soon as possible. The Chicago Marathon will be held the same weekend, so it will be hard to find rooms for attendees as we get closer to the conference. Because of the marathon, you might want to book your flights a bit early as well.

[NOTE 3 June 2013: If you make your reservations either by phone or using the electronic link, please indicate single occupancy. Right now the hotel shows no rooms available  for double occupancy. (Don’t worry: the hotel is aware of the issue and has told our members to proceed this way.) If you have any problems, please email the local organizer (lsigel@depaul.edu) or our contact at the hotel, Lisa Le (312-795-6517,   Lisa.Le@silversmithhotel.com) if you have any problems.]

MWCBS 2012 Registration Information

Nathan Phillips Square, TorontoI am pleased to invite you to the annual Midwest Conference on British
Studies, 12-14 October 2012.   Our meeting is at the Delta Chelsea Hotel
(33 Gerard St. West) in downtown Toronto.  Our host is the University of
Toronto.  The Delta Chelsea Hotel is offering a discounted conference rate
for MWCBS attendees.

As with last year’s conference, high levels of interest in the conference
and the quality of the proposals mean that we will run four simultaneous
panels instead of three.  And, like last year, our registration process is
now online.  That way, if you wish to register using your credit card, you
can.  We are using the same system as the North American Conference on
British Studies, so for many of you, the interface should be familiar.

We will hold our annual Friday reception, and our plenary speaker will be
Professor Ian Gentles of Glendon College who will speak on “English
Revolution Studies: The State of Play.”  Professor Gentles has written
many articles and three books on the English Revolution: The New Model
Army in England, Ireland and Scotland, 1645-1653 (1992); Soldiers, Writers
and Statesmen of the English Revolution (1998) and The English Revolution
and the Wars in the Three Kingdoms, 1638-1652 (2007). Professor Gentles is
a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and recipient of several major
research grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
of Canada.

Our Saturday luncheon keynote speaker will be John Gillis, Professor
Emeritus of Rutgers University who will speak on “The Rise and Fall of the
Island Race.”  In addition to his many articles, Professor Gillis is the
author of six monographs: The Prussian Bureaucracy in Crisis, 1840-60
(1971); Youth and History: Tradition and Change in European Age Relations,
1750-Present (1975); Development of European Society, 1770-1870 (1977);
For Better, For Worse: British Marriages, 1600 to the present (1985); A
World of Their Own Making: Myth, Ritual, and the Quest for Family Values
(1996); Islands of the Mind: How the Human Imagination Created the
Atlantic World (2004).  He has been a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars, the Center for Advanced Study in the
Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced
Study in the Social Sciences.

If you would like to see the MWCBS 2012 program, you can download it as a .pdf.  Please keep in mind that while the schedule is confirmed, the program is a draft and there may be a few slight adjustments in the coming weeks.

As you can see, the MWCBS 2012 will be full of interesting panels.  This
is due to the hard work of our Program Committee.  For their work in
putting together a stellar line-up of panels, I would like to thank Lia
Paradis, Chair of the Program Committee, and the Program Committee
members, Eugene Beiriger, Phil Harling, Robin Hermann, Isaac Land, Jennifer McNabb, and Lisa Sigel.

I would also like to thank our Local Arrangements Chair, Jennifer Mori,
who has accomplished the difficult task of finding a good location,
keeping our registration costs down, and managing the day-to-day logistics
of organizing the conference.  It’s a lot of hard work, so be sure to
thank her when you see her in Toronto.

I very much look forward to seeing all of you in Toronto in October.
Please be sure to contact us if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
